Equine Therapeutic Work
Working on Horses vs People
I’ve often had people mention to me that it’s probably easier working on horses than people since “They don’t talk back.” And it’s actually just the opposite. Horses (most of the time) are great communicators, letting me know what they like, what they don’t like, where they want to be worked on, when it feels good, and when it doesn’t feel good.
What Type of Work Do You Do?
I am not an animal medical professional, I do not diagnose, prognose, or prescribe medications or treatments.
I do use a variety of massage techniques, energy work, and stretching.

Before the Session.
There is an Intake Form for you to fill out, covering contact details and info about your horse.
For the Start of the Session.
For the Session your horse will need to be haltered and tied or you can hold the lead rope, no ground tying.
I begin with an Evaluation, where I feel all the major muscles with enough pressure looking for any reaction, such as stepping away, kicking, or biting (even if your horse has a good temperament, if I hit a sore spot, they’ll let me know). This tells me where the “sore” spots are and where to focus. A horse doesn’t always let me know, and as the session progresses, other areas may come up.
For the first session it’s preferable for you to be present so you can watch how your animal reacts, plus I can let you know if something comes up, and even show you some ways you can work on your companion. You are welcome to do other work while I’m working.
During the Session.
This is a full body session: From poll, down the neck, withers, shoulders, pec/biceps, down the front leg, top line, barrel, abdomen, hip, and down the rear leg, lasting usually from 45-60 minutes, occasionally longer, it all depends on what comes up and how your horse reacts.
While I work signs of release are “lick and chews,” yawns, and sighs. The eyes growing soft, bottom lip make quiver and/or hang open, and they could fall asleep. Sometimes your horse might make expressions you’ve never seen before.
“Personally, I have always felt the best doctor in the world is the veterinarian. He can’t ask his patients what is the matter — he’s got to just know.”
~Will Rogers
After the Session.
Once the Session is done, you’ll take your horse for a short walk to loosen up the muscles, and for you to see any differences in their movement and/or behavior. They’ll usually be calmer, their head may hang low because they’re relaxed, there’s more freedom and looseness to their movement, and they just seem to feel better overall. Though I can’t control their attitude.
The Session usually improves their disposition, yet it can vary. Afterwards the horse can be relaxed and stay that way, or they can be relaxed and want to kick up their heels, including feeling either way the following day. The affect can be different with each session, and they can react just the opposite of how you think your horse would.
I find it a bit better to give your horse some down time and let the body reintegrate itself, however you can ride after a Session, just don’t go all out, take your time, and find out how your horse is responding and feeling.
How Do I Get A Session?
Click HERE to fill out the form, describing who and what you want a session for. You will be contacted about setting up a time to talk for a 15 minute consultation. During this call we will talk about what is going on with your horse, figure out if I might be able to help, and if I’m the right practitioner for you.
If we are a fit for each other, we’ll schedule a session time that works for both of us.
